This volume is the second, updated and enlarged version of the Bibliography
on Ethnic Relations in Eastern Europe and includes major writings that address
the complexity of problems related to ethnicity, nationalism, ethnic conflict,
conflict resolution, institutions and political participation of minorities,
and new initiatives in managing multiethnic co-existence. This new version is
a selection of relevant literature in English, Russian and German and of the
works written in local languages, used mostly in national contexts, but which
could have a regional and maybe also a theoretical relevance.
The main part of the material has been gathered by the local contributors
of this project, who attempted to compile the most important works in their
country or sub-region relevant to our topics published after 1989. The second
resource was the library of the Central European University in Budapest. In
the case of the English books and journal articles, we leaned on the
collection of this library, specialized on the region, and on the study of
nationalism and ethnic relations. The third part of the material is adopted
from the Sociological Abstract, as well as other bibliographies of different
experts and institutions.
We worked with a standardized list of thematic and geographic keywords, as
well as two other lists of disciplines and empirical sources of the studies.
The suitable categories for all records can be found in the book in this order
after the bibliographic data and the abbreviation of the language of the
publication. The abstract follows the keywords, resuming the content and the
main arguments of work. The structure of the entire Bibliography is thematic,
while all items were introduced on the basis of their first, and most
important subject keyword. The secondary order within the thematic chapters is
alphabetical by author and editor.
Using this bibliography is much easier with the help of its various
indexes. The third part of the book contains (1) an authors and editors index,
(2) a thematic index, (3) a geographical index, including regions, countries
and ethnic minority names, and (4) an index of journals. The thematic index
shows not only the possible topics to be found in the bibliography, but also
the randomness of their occurrence. In classifying the regions, we used the
categories: Central Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary),
Southeast Europe (Croatia, Yugoslavia (Serbia, Montenegro),
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania), the Baltics
(Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), the Commonwealth of Independent States (for the
whole former Soviet Union without the Baltic States), CIS - the Western
Republics (Russian Federation, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova), CIS - the
Transcuacasus (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan), and CIS - Central Asia (Kazahstan,
Turkeminstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan). Eastern Europe is the
collective name used when more subregions, are even all of them are referred
to. The small multiethnic regions (for example Kosovo, Tranylvania) are
included in the ethnic minority index. The numbers in the indexes are
identical to the serial numbers of the records in the bibliography.
This bibliography may serve further policy analyses and reform-oriented
projects in different countries and communities, and may aid scholarly
investigation as well. The editor and the contributors of this volume hope to
be helpful for those searching for basic works, analyses and interpretations
of the Eastern European ethnic phenomena. However, the bibliography is
incomplete by nature. The present list could be and should be enriched by the
users by adding items that our search might have missed.
An earlier version of the bibliography can be viewed on LGI's Managing
Multiethnic Communities Project's website: http://www.osi.hu/lgi/ethnic.
