| Abstract |
The authors draw from previous research regarding differences between ethnic and political national identities to analyze ethnic relations between Estonians and Russians in Estonia. Although cultural and linguistic assimilation of the Russian minority in Estonia was poor during the Soviet era, assimilation has greatly improved since independence. The Russian minority has demonstrated a growing interest in learning the Estonian language, acquiring citizenship, and becoming active in political parties. It is concluded that cultural integration will be a process of long term adjustment, which will require the maintenance of political stability in the region to be successful. |
