An introduction to a special journal issue on the war in the Balkans reflects on key issues plaguing Yugoslavia and its divided peoples, focusing on the emergence of nationalism and interethnic strife after the collapse of communism, and on the shared culture of East and Central European societies. Key political events that led to unrest in Yugoslavia also are reviewed, with partaicular attention toward the Serbian communists' turn toward nationalism and the policies of Western governments. |
