| Abstract |
It is shown that ethnic problems can be profitably analyzed by exploring two types of discourse: nation-state, which constitutes a diachronic-oriented type of discourse centered around easily identifiable semiotic codes (e.g., language, history, religion); and minority, which is organized around issues of integration and accommodation. Focusing on three Islamic minorities in Bulgaria - the Turks, the Pomaks, and the Gypsies - it is demonstrated that cultural identity is reflexively constituted via processes of ethnomethodological reactions to five domains - the mass media, national holidays, educational bodies, the army, and the police - that display close interaction between the nation-state institutions and the Bulgarian minority communities. |
