Abstract Pre- and post 1989 political, communications, and educational trends in eastern Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Hungary were examined through a survey of 129 political/social scientists, health professionals, and highly educated elites from all Eastern European nations, with the exception of Albania and the former USSR. Political changes were found in all countries, but were the greatest in the Czech Republic, eastern Germany, & Romania. After 1989 the prospects for the use of military force were lessened in all countries; Romania had the highest potential for use of military force. Party and ideological control of political education decreased after 1989. With the exception of eastern Germany, ethnic & political tolerance increased in most countries. Nationalism increased in five countries, but decreased in Romania.
