| Abstract |
The author comments on five articles on ethnic relations in the USSR. They are all praised for illuminating the diffusion of opinion in contemporary Soviet politics, not only regarding crucial issues of unity and succession, but also on more general issues. John Comaroff is commended for his original theoretical and analytical contribution to the study of ethnic relations in general, and his call for a critical analysis of the language used in studying ethnicity and nationalism. Viktor Sergeev's political analysis of ethnic relations, which places the contemporary ethnic struggle in the context of post-1985 Soviet political developments, is likewise lauded. |
