Abstract Ethnic conflict and tension were common in the former USSR Soviet Union, especially within the autonomous republics and regions named after small, sometimes aboriginal, peoples. With the recent upsurge in ethnic conflict, many Russians have been emigrating from these areas. Public opinion surveys (N = 3,500 working-class people) conducted in the summer of 1990 in nine regions of the Russian Federation show the differential attitudes of Russians and of minority peoples on various issues connected to nationality relations.
