| Abstract |
Due to the small number of Jews in Poland (aroud 2,000), most Polish youths have never encountered a Jew; yet, it is argued that this lack of contact promotes rather than restrains use of stereotypes. Questionnaire data from 138 secondary school and university students regarding attitudes toward Jews reveal that 111 respondents had stereotyped perceptions of Jews as being interested primarily in economic activity, retaining their customs and religion, and constituting a homogeneous group without class differences. Negative and positive perceptions occurred with similar frequency. The influence of a nationalistic orientation on attitudes toward Jews is discussed. It is concluded that the source of anti-Semitism among Polish youth is found in cultural transmission within the family. |
