| Abstract |
The relationship between language and ethnic identity of the Kashubes, an "ethnolect" within Poland, is examined. The sociocultural context that influences the Kashubes' views of their language as a distinguishing component of their ethnic identity is described. A random sample of Kashubes (N = 458) were interviewed, revealing a variety of attitudes toward their ethnicity and language. The elderly tended to preserve Kashubian to the greatest degree, whereas younger people often saw Kashubian as an undesirable vestige of a country-folk tradition. Socialization within the family does not generally aim at the internalization of Kashubian. Recent political developments and a rising sense of cultural awareness have led to a new awareness of Kashubian that may work to preserve the culture. |
