| Abstract |
A discussion of cultural aspects of the Slovak-Hungarian relationship, based on the perception that nations are defined culturally rather than territorially. After examining the differences between national/cultural and national/political identification, illustrated with definitions of nationality in both languages, it is suggested the Hungarians and Slovaks have played complementary roles in both the preservation & destruction of Slovak ethnic and national identity. A vision is put forth of a confederation of semiindependent national states in central Europe, which would alleviate the anxiety experienced by the Slovaks in recent history. A brief historical review is provided of both nations showing them as cultural entities since the ninth century. |
