| Abstract |
The author, a scholar who has been a prominent participant as well as a close observer of recent developments, argues that ethnicity has a multifaceted role. It is the most accessible basis for political mobilization, a means of controlling power and resources in a transforming society. He concludes that the socialist and post-socialust nations, as well as the current violent ethnopiltics stem from projects founded upon decrepit doctrine and elitist efforts to build a state upon ethnic foundations. |
