| Abstract |
An investigation of national identification among two communities (1,000 residents each) of ethnic minorities: Slovenes in southwestern Hungary and Hungarians in the border zone of Slovenia (former Yugoslavia). Research conducted 1984-86 included analysis of communal documents and statistics, verbal and written language tests of primary-school children, and questionnaires completed by 100 households in each community regarding lifestyles, language usage, electronic media consumption, self-image, and relations with majority populations and homeland. Results show that the members of the groups identify themselves by ethnic characteristics, and primarily by language. However, high rates of ethnic intermarriage and patterns of media consumption indicate that ethnic identification is not at conflict with civic integration. |
