Abstract Data from a 1990 survey are drawn from to examine patterns of national identity in contemporary Hungary in relation to the increasingly xenophobic attitudes of Hungarians toward minorities, including ethnic Hungarian refugees arriving from Transylvania. Analysis demonstrates how emerging patterns of national identification conflate the past and the present in ways that could have disastrous consequences.
