| Abstract |
Since the Romanians took over the area of Transylvania in 1918, the situation of the Hungarians has worsened. After the dramatic upheavals of 1989, the Hungarians were hoping that their situation would improve, but this has not been the case. Several scenarios concerning Hungarian/Romanian conflict are possible: a change might take place by peaceful means; Transylvania could become part of Hungary, again; the conflict could become a violent one; or Hungary could become involved in the conflict. On the national level, a treaty between the Hungarian minority and the Romanian government could be a solution. On the international level, several European organizations are working on the protection of minorities. |
