Abstract Comments are offered on the war in postcommunist Yugoslavia, contending that the conflict between Serbs and Croats is best understood as a "mutual enslaving through engendered hatred." The political vacuum created by the disappearance of the communist party from Yugoslavia's political scene in January 1990 is discussed, along with the lack of effective leadership on all sides of the Balkan conflict.
