Abstract The author compares the new nationalism movements in contemporary postcommunist European countries with the classical national movements of the nineteenth century. Both movements (1) emerged in response to the crisis of an old regime and its value system; (2) defined national borders in terms of ethnic and historical boundaries; (3) can be characterized in terms of a low level of political experience among the population (a stereotypical notion of a personalized nation, and a defensive position); and (4) accorded a decisive role to nationally relevant conflict of interests. While the contemporary movements are fighting for the political rights of preexisting nations and the classical movements were fighting for the rights of a nation-to-be, similar specifics of the nation-forming process can be observed in both cases.
