Submitting a Letter of Intent or Full Proposal to LGI

LGI awards two types of grants: unsolicited and solicited. The first item listed on the right side of this page, entitled "Template for Letters of Intent and Full Proposals", must be used in submitting your proposal. It contains instructions on the first page of the document.

If you have a project idea and look for support you can send us an unsolicited proposal. If you reply to a request for proposals that LGI put out you are applying for a solicited grant.

If you are interested in receiving an unsolicited grant from LGI you should first submit a Letter of Intent (see related files), which provides an overview of the project you envision carrying out. Letters of intent that are approved by the LGI Steering Committee go to Stage Two of the proposal application process, where the applicant is asked to submit a full proposal. The full proposal is a longer, more detailed version of the letter of intent.

The project will be assigned an LGI Project Manager, who is a specialist in the field or countries addressed in the proposal. The Project Manager will ask the applicant to submit the full proposal, integrating any suggestions or requirements which the Steering Committee listed during its review process. The applicant will have an opportunity to discuss the project and proposal with the Project Manager.

If you reply to a request for proposals and thus apply for a solicited grant you do not have to send us a letter of intent. In this case you directly go to Stage Two and should follow the instructions below for submitting a full proposal and budget. The request for proposals may also include specific directions you should take into consideration when writing your full proposal.

Proposals should be written in clear English. Important points should be highlighted, underlined or set apart from the rest of the text.

If relevant to the proposal, you may provide additional information in an annex, such as:

  • Documentation from others involved in the project
  • Letters of support from organizations or individuals
  • Documentation indicating other funding sources
