BACKGROUND
In order to respond to the needs of ethnically diverse societies undergoing post-socialist transformations, the Local Government and Public Service Reform Initiative (LGI) of the Open Society Institute (OSI) - Budapest initiated the Managing Multiethnic Communities Program (MMCP) as an in-house project in November 1996. Through MMCP diversity management projects, LGI has played an active and integral role in promoting good governance and contributing to the OSI mission of social justice and the protection of rights for all.
Since its inception, MMCP has cooperated with research institutes, governmental institutions, and non-governmental and international organizations, particularly in Central and South Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.
